Gas prices are soaring, and the planet is changing. As a result, fuel efficiency is commonly a top priority for car owners nowadays, both to save money on fuel and to contribute less harm to the environment. If you're not quite ready to take the electric vehicle (EV) plunge, you can search for a car with great fuel economy. For BMWs in particular, there are plenty of options available to you.
In this article, the team at Apple BMW of York, Pennsylvania, walks you through the importance of fuel efficiency, lists five of the most fuel-efficient BMWs, and even gives you some tips on how to maximize fuel efficiency regardless of your vehicle.
Benefits of Fuel-Efficient BMWs
We've already mentioned a few of the benefits of owning a fuel-efficient vehicle, such as lower fuel costs and a reduced environmental impact, and BMWs are no exception. Though there's a wide range of engine types in BMW's portfolio, there are plenty of fuel-efficient options. Fuel efficiency is especially important for those who drive frequently or over long distances, such as commuters or avid travelers. While EVs may be too expensive for your budget, prioritizing fuel-efficiency can be nearly as advantageous, both in terms of saving money and reducing your environmental impact.
Top 5 Most Fuel-Efficient BMW Models
We hope the following suggestions for fuel-efficient BMW models can help to guide you toward finding your perfect BMW. Not including hybrid electric vehicles, here are five of the most fuel-efficient BMW vehicles available that feature a gas-powered combustion engine:
BMW 530i
With the choice between rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, BMW designed this sedan with a focus on long-distance driving. Of the two, the rear-wheel drive model gets the best fuel economy with less overall weight to deal with. This car has a fuel capacity of 18 gallons and gets about 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, taking you up to 585 miles on a single tank of gas.
BMW 430i
This sedan is available in Coupe, Gran Coupe, and Convertible styling, though the Convertible gets the worst fuel economy of the group. If you stick to rear-wheel drive and ensure that you turn the car's ECO PRO mode on, you should be able to get up to 523 miles on a single tank of gas, with mpg ratings of 25 in the city and 34 on the highway.
BMW 330i
The 330i is very similar to the 430i in terms of fuel economy. Rear-wheel drive remains the best choice, and turning on BMW's ECO PRO mode will maximize the car's efficiency. In this Series 3 car, a single tank of fuel can get you up to 523 miles of distance, with mpg ratings of 25 in the city and 34 on the highway.
BMW X1
The X1 is BMW's entry-level SUV, which is only available in all-wheel drive. Though it can't hold as much fuel as the competing sedans, it nevertheless gets an equivalent fuel efficiency despite its larger size, achieving 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. You should be able to go up to 486 miles without needing to refill your tank.
BMW 230i
As BMW's entry-level small coupe, the 230i has the best fuel economy of any BMW vehicle. Thanks to its reduced size and aerodynamic design, the 230i gets 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. You should be able to go 473 miles without refilling your tank, although its capacity of 13.7 gallons is a bit lower than the others.
BMW's ECO PRO Mode
You can use BMW's ECO PRO mode to improve your vehicle's fuel economy at the press of a button. This mode adjusts settings within your vehicle to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%, for example, changing climate control settings or softening the throttle response of the engine. In addition to ECO PRO mode, BMWs also make use of features such as brake energy regeneration, an optimum shift indicator, and an aerodynamic design to provide your vehicle with the best possible fuel economy.
Additional Tips for Maximizing Fuel Efficiency
Whether you choose to drive a fuel-efficient vehicle or simply wish to improve your fuel economy in general, there are plenty of steps you can take to optimize your fuel usage. For example, failing to maintain your tires regularly can decrease your vehicle's fuel economy by increasing their rolling resistance. Without the proper tire pressure and grip, your car's engine will need to work harder to move your vehicle forward.
Additionally, try to avoid sitting in your car with the engine idling as much as possible. If you plan to sit for more than three minutes, turning your engine off can save you precious gas. In terms of your driving habits, avoid driving aggressively or accelerating and braking too quickly. Also, it's sometimes believed that turning off your air conditioner and driving with the windows down instead can improve your fuel economy. In fact, driving with your windows down can create such strong wind resistance that you end up using more fuel than simply turning on your air conditioning.
