Throughout the company's history, BMW has built a reputation as a future-facing manufacturer. Every BMW is chock-full of high-quality materials and the latest technology and features. Even among this lineage of performance-forward vehicles, one model stands out. The M2 is well regarded among consumers and experts alike for countless reasons. Keep reading to learn all about the M2 and whether people will consider it a classic in the years to come.

History of the M2

First produced in 2015 for the 2016 model year, BMW's M2 quickly set itself apart from the rest of the 2-series. BMW designed the M2, which was part of the company's M Performance range, as a more accessible, entry-level sports car. Despite its lower price point, the M2 has all the traits of a high-end BMW, including precise engineering, agile and responsive handling, world-class power, and an overall thrilling driving experience.

Engine and Transmission

A BMW M twin-turbocharged 3-liter inline-six engine powers the 2023 M2 and is the basis for the car's first-class power, speed, and agility. This engine generates a colossal 453 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Every M2 comes standard with rear-wheel drive, and you can choose between the standard six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission.

Given this immense power, the M2 sacrifices fuel efficiency. The EPA estimates that the M2 achieves 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway when you select the six-speed manual. Opting for the eight-speed automatic transmission decreases the highway rating to 23 mpg.

Performance

Behind an M2, you can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds with the available eight-speed automatic transmission. This acceleration decreases with the six-speed manual transmission, but only slightly, to 4.2 seconds. Overall, the M2 can reach a top speed of 155 mph, but its power and acceleration are only a part of the M2's overall performance.

Every M2 delivers a thrilling driving experience through its combination of speed with maximum control and handling. Standard Active M Differential and Adaptive M Suspension work together to optimize the vehicle's handling to provide you with an exciting yet smooth ride. Plus, you'll never feel out of control with the M2's standard M compound brakes, which give you responsive braking in all road and weather conditions.

Exterior

When you build your own M2, which you can do on our website, you can choose between five distinct paint colors and two types of wheels. You can also add several additional packages to your M2 to further personalize your car's appearance. Options such as the Shadowline Package — which enhances your M2 with black exterior elements — or the M Carbon Roof — which boosts your vehicle's driving dynamics by decreasing its center of gravity and overall weight — give your car even more of a distinct look.

Interior and Technology

Unlike many other performance or sports cars, BMW designed the M2's interior to be as useful and comfortable as it is stylish. For example, the coupe's two rear seats are roomier than those of the M2's competitors, such as the Audi TT or Porsche 911. While these seats aren't equivalent to a minivan's backseats, they're more than good enough for your average passenger. Plus, like the exterior, you can customize your M2's interior by choosing from four different upholstery and three trim options.

The M2's interior technology is as cutting-edge and smartly designed as its engine. Once behind the M2's wheel, you'll first notice the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, which presents you with all the information you need to know about your car. This curved display connects to the M2's standard 14.9-inch touch-screen infotainment system — BMW's biggest display screen yet. BMW's latest iDrive with Operating System 8 lets you connect your device wirelessly through either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

BMW's available packages also allow you to upgrade your M2's technology. Optional technological upgrades include:

  • Heated steering wheel.
  • Wireless charging tray in the center console.
  • Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot with 5G.

Safety Features

The BMW M2 comes standard with several first-class safety features that work to protect you during every ride. These safety features include:

  • Active driving assistant.
  • Lane departure warning.
  • Active blind-spot detection.
  • Active lane-keeping assist.
  • Automated emergency braking.

You can also purchase other optional safety features, such as:

  • Parking assistant.
  • Active cruise control.
  • Frontal collision warning.

Warranties

In addition to the overall quality of each model, another reason to purchase a BMW is the warranties and complimentary scheduled maintenance program it comes with. Every M2 comes with the following:

  • A limited warranty that covers four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • A powertrain warranty that protects your vehicle for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • Coverage of complimentary maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Is the M2 the Car of the Future?

You should now know the ins and outs of the BMW M2. Still, the question remains: Is the M2 the car of the future? The short answer is yes. With a unique blend of power, performance, and ease of use, the M2 seems destined to be a top performance vehicle both today and in the future. BMW's M2 manages to be simultaneously powerful, fast, quick, stable, smooth, quiet, and comfortable. Whether driving in a traffic-heavy city or an open highway, the M2 offers a first-class driving experience that's not easily replicated, even among cars more expensive than BMW's M2.
