If you're shopping in the luxury SUV segment, it's tough to beat the appeal of a BMW. The German brand delivers the "Ultimate Driving Machine" to its buyers, each of which comes well-equipped with performance, comfort, and tech features. The BMW X7 is no exception, boasting the opulence you expect from BMW and the space you need for your busy lifestyle. Take a closer look at what's new on the 2023 model to determine which trim level is right for you.

Eye-Catching Styling

The 2023 BMW X7 is a luxury three-row SUV that underwent a redesign inside and out. The exterior showcases updated front and rear styling, which helps this capable vehicle look even more striking on the road. BMW restyled the headlights, increasing their intensity with adaptive LED bulbs to improve visibility. The larger kidney-shaped grille and well-sculpted body lines accent the front end. You can even light it up with signature LED accent lighting.

The X7 comes in two primary trim levels: XDrive40i and M50i. With the base trim, standard exterior features include roof rails, a power dual-section tailgate, 21-inch wheels, and a panoramic sunroof. The M50i is the performance-focused trim level, boasting the illuminated front grille, larger 22-inch wheels, specialized brakes with blue calipers, an upgraded exhaust system, and soft-close doors. In addition, a set of 23-inch wheels and an upgraded trailer hitch are available as standalone options.

Spacious Cabin

The roomy cabin offers seat seven and includes a spacious cargo area holding plenty of gear. Even the entry-level trim comes with a long list of luxury features, helping to set this apart from other three-row SUVs in its segment. The front seats are heated and multi-contoured for maximum comfort, while the front armrests and steering wheel also possess heating functionality. Four-zone automatic climate control keeps everyone in the vehicle comfortable. The seats include simulated leather upholstery, and the ambient interior lighting system is fully customizable.

Stepping up to the M50i trim adds a few more comfort features. This model's cabin includes leather upholstery and rear power-operated sunshades on the windows. BMW also offers packages that boost the comfort and appeal of the interior. The Climate Comfort package adds a fifth zone for the automatic climate-control system, along with ventilation for the front seats and heated second-row seats. The Executive package bundles massaging front seats, a glass shifter and controls, and heated and cooled cup holders.

Premium Tech Features

The X7 also doesn't skimp on tech features, ensuring drivers and passengers stay connected and entertained. A slightly curved digital display panel houses a 12.3-inch gauge cluster, which the driver can customize to view pertinent information at a glance, along with a 14.9-inch touch screen that operates with BMW's infotainment system. Additional standard equipment includes a 10-speaker audio system, a wireless charging pad, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and integrated navigation.

With the M50i, you get an upgraded 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with surround sound and an upgraded version of the infotainment system that works with gesture controls. Gesture with your hands to change the track, adjust the volume, or control other features. One optional upgrade is a 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system.

High-End Safety Equipment

No matter which BMW X7 you choose, your vehicle will have a long list of advanced safety features. It includes standard equipment like anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring, and airbags throughout both rows of seating. BMW also includes a suite of active driver aids across the board. This suite bundles front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The top trim tacks on a surround-view camera with an automated parking system. You can also add the Driving Assistance Professional package for a few extra safety features. This package includes forward cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, collision detection with automatic lane-change assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Power and Performance

In addition to being a luxury vehicle, the BMW X7 is a performance model that delivers an incredible driving experience. The xDrive40i trim contains a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine that produces 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It works with an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels. The turbocharger delivers a quick acceleration boost when you hit the gas, while the transmission offers smooth and efficient shifts as you navigate curves. In addition, a new rocker switch enables the driver to select gears without taking their eyes off the road.

If you choose the M50i trim, your X7 will include a more powerful 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. It pumps out 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, pairing with the same eight-speed automatic transmission. Although all-wheel drive is standard, this model includes rear-wheel steering to put more control in the driver's hands. Both trims include an air suspension with adaptive dampers. Buyers can customize their vehicles further with optional rear-axle steering and active anti-roll bars. These upgrades reduce body roll for a more comfortable and stable ride.

As mentioned, this SUV is available with an upgraded trailer hitch. This addition is a worthwhile upgrade if you plan to use the X7 to tow. The maximum towing capacity with that hitch comes in at 7,500 pounds, enough to tow a small boat or livestock trailer, a larger travel trailer, or a pop-up camper. This makes the X7 an excellent option for weekend warriors and those wanting to bring their fishing boat or jet skis along on their adventures.
